About the Orange Shoals Otters
The Orange Shoals Otters were established in 2008 by residents of the Orange Shoals community with a simple goal: to create a fun, recreational summer swim team where kids can grow as swimmers and teammates.
That philosophy still defines the Otters today. Our focus is on having fun while learning the values of hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship, both in and out of the pool. We welcome residents as well as local swimmers from outside the Orange Shoals neighborhood.
A Team Built From Within
One of the things that makes the Otters special is continuity. All members of our coaching staff are former Orange Shoals Otters. Many began swimming with the team as young children, developed early leadership skills as in-water assistants, and eventually stepped into formal coaching roles.
This creates a unique environment where coaches truly understand the team culture and serve as relatable, positive role models for younger swimmers.
Why Families Choose the Otters
Families choose the Orange Shoals Otters because we offer:
- A positive, age-appropriate introduction to competitive swimming
- Coaches who know the team and the kids personally
- A welcoming, volunteer-driven community
- An emphasis on fun, effort, and sportsmanship over pressure
Meets, Spirit, and Community
The Otters typically compete in five meets per season, with each week featuring a fun team theme such as neon, tie-dye, Disney, or red-white-and-blue. Swimmers, coaches, and parents all join in on the fun.
Swimmers may also have opportunities to advance beyond the regular season, with qualifying athletes participating in league-level competition.
Above all, the Otters are about community. From themed meets to end-of-season celebrations, the team emphasizes belonging, encouragement, and shared experiences for swimmers and families alike.
Coaching & Practice Experience
Practices are designed to balance structure and fun:
- Each practice begins with a land warm-up, stretching, and a “question of the day” to help swimmers connect with one another.
- Meets and practices include pep talks, team chants, and positive reinforcement.
- Every Friday during summer practices is Fun Friday, featuring games, treats, and recognition such as the “Otter of the Week” award, which highlights exceptional swimming, effort, teamwork, or sportsmanship.
Wrapping Up the Season
Each season concludes with a team banquet that includes:
- A great meal
- A photo slideshow capturing season highlights
- Awards recognizing “Awesome Otters” in each age group
The banquet is a chance to celebrate growth as swimmers, friendships formed, and accomplishments achieved throughout the season.
